Happy Halloween Y’all!

October 26, 2010

This past weekend Jasper’s twin cousins turned 10 and had a costume birthday party.  Up until that morning Jasper had refused to come anywhere NEAR the cowboy costume I’d bought him – but the idea of going to a costume party like George in one of his favorite Curious George stories was apparently very exciting because he practically ran to get his costume on!  After the party was over, I couldn’t resist taking him outside to get some pictures – who knew if we’d ever get him to wear it again?   I’m so glad we did make some time for pictures because just look at all this cuteness!

Fall Foliage

October 19, 2010

All photographers start by practicing on their own kids, which means that a day doesn’t go by when there isn’t some sort of test shoot..  Then, eventually, family time gives way to client shoots, evenings are spent editing those shoots and memory cards become full of  other people’s children!

So this weekend I literally had to “schedule” a shoot with Jasper just like I would a client shoot.  I picked out his wardrobe, convinced my husband to come along and play wrangler, cleared my memory cards and we headed out at just the right time of day and the right time of year for peak fall foliage.

In all honesty there were a million other things we needed to do that day, but now that I have these images I can’t imagine that I almost went grocery shopping instead..

Happy Fall!

A Boy and His Bear

You love your Bear, and because I love you,  I love Bear too.  Because the way you love Bear shows me a sweet tender side of you that I wouldn’t otherwise see. The one that shows bear the moon when you see it (Look Bear, the moon!) or tells him about your day (I sat on the firetruck at daycare Bear!) and makes sure that he is under the covers with you at night.

I know too that someday, when you are all grown,  Bear will remind me of these precious days when you aren’t afraid, ashamed or “too old” to love a stuffed animal unconditionally and fiercely without holding anything back.  Bear will remind me of when mommy, daddy and a Bear were the center of your universe and maybe I’ll close my eyes and be able to picture you exactly as you are now and remember the way your little hand felt in my hand, or the way your loose curls feel nuzzled into my neck when you hug me.  I love you, and I love your Bear, and I will always be happy to include him in your pictures as long as you want me too..which I hope is a very, very long time.

Today my sweet baby boy turns two.. so bittersweet. In these images you see the wild toddler who won’t stop running and also the big boy starting to emerge – the one who sat and “posed” for a second on the chair for mommy.

Summer session are my favorite.  Yes, we may have to keep the kid up a bit late to get the yummiest light, but it’s all so worth it! We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area with tons of great places to shoot. But with the right light and the right moment, even the most mundane places are backdrop enough for a stunning portrait…

I took this picture of Jasper on a hot, sticky day  after work/daycare just hanging out in the yard.  I love the way the evening light is just barely kissing his flyaway curls almost as much as I love his funny little face (not quite a smile – more like a smirk.) Just one of those expressions that is pure, vintage Jasper that makes my heart sing when I see it.

These are the types of moments (memories) that I love to capture for my clients as well..

How else will I be able to remember exactly how it felt to look at this face.. that perfect, pouty and kissable bottom lip, those long eyelashes, the crooked little bottom teeth?
