The Perfect Family of Four

September 9, 2010

Beautiful family -check!  Baby that makes great eye contact – check!  Amazing location – check!  Gorgeous evening light – check!  These are all things that make a photographer’s heart beat a little faster with excitement, but put them all together and you get what I consider the perfect session!

This gorgeous guy is going to be a performer I just know it, seriously he LOVES the camera!  He’s going to be one soon, and what better way to celebrate than with a photo session with mom and dad and big brother Ryan?

Speaking of big brother Ryan..

Doesn’t that just melt your heart? And if you were wondering where these two get their good looks, you are about to find out..

Told you they were perfect! And while we are on the subject of perfection, check out this head shot of Mr. Looks:

It’s almost like he practiced that one in the mirror!

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, it did when the most beautiful sunset light appeared. This is the type of sundrenched golden/reddish backlighting that photographers dream about..

I actually SQUEALED when I saw that image above come up on my computer! And this next one I know wasn’t the family’s favorite from the series but I loved how mom and dad managed to find a tender moment while the kids are just doing their own thing..

..isn’t that just the way it is?

And then it was all over too soon..

Thank you S. family for spending such a perfect evening with me.  And a very happy first birthday to Nate – many happy returns beautiful boy!

Today my sweet baby boy turns two.. so bittersweet. In these images you see the wild toddler who won’t stop running and also the big boy starting to emerge – the one who sat and “posed” for a second on the chair for mommy.

I love this child so much it hurts.

Maddox – 18 Months

August 17, 2010

When Cathy emailed me to set up a session for her 18 month old Maddox and told me she’d been a long time blog reader of mine and that Maddox (like Jasper) had also been a reflux baby, I had a feeling we’d have LOTS to talk about and totally hit it off, which of course we did!

We had been planning this session for months and had the perfect location picked out when Chelsea Clinton had to go ruin it all and get married a few miles away (gridlock!), so we did a last minute scramble to find a new spot.  It was a little bit of an adventure getting there, but Cathy and Maddox were game and I think the results were definitely worth it.

Maddox is a sweet, smart, curious little guy..

who is so photogenic I am having a very hard time even deciding which images to post here..

he’s a little bit mischievous..

but he did consent to sit still for a second or two..

and we even got the hint of  a smile..

most of all, it was quite obvious how very much he loves his mommy..

Thank you Cathy and Maddox for letting me document this time in Maddox’s life and to capture the special bond you two share!

Summer session are my favorite.  Yes, we may have to keep the kid up a bit late to get the yummiest light, but it’s all so worth it! We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area with tons of great places to shoot. But with the right light and the right moment, even the most mundane places are backdrop enough for a stunning portrait…

I took this picture of Jasper on a hot, sticky day  after work/daycare just hanging out in the yard.  I love the way the evening light is just barely kissing his flyaway curls almost as much as I love his funny little face (not quite a smile – more like a smirk.) Just one of those expressions that is pure, vintage Jasper that makes my heart sing when I see it.

These are the types of moments (memories) that I love to capture for my clients as well..

When Heather contacted me about wanting to set up a family portrait session I was so excited, but I admit that my excitement turned into slight apprehension when I learned that she wanted to include the family dog and that her daughter Peyton was 15 months old.  Four subjects, two of whom could potentially be very uncooperative we would need to have a lot of skill, a lot of patience and little bit luck on our  side. And you know what? Sometimes it’s the hardest shoots that get the best results because I think we got several AMAZING images, dog, toddler, beautiful mom and handsome dad and all!

And even though she made me work incredibly hard for it, I finally managed to get a little smile out of Miss Peyton!
