All newborn babies are cute, but some are just plain gorgeous! I think I let out an audible gasp when I first caught a glimpse of Alessandra in her carseat. That hair, those eyes, that chin! A Daddy better watch out because she’s going to be a heartbreaker..

Such a beautiful family, I can’t wait to see them again!

Carter Mathew

Carter kicked off my newborn-a-palooza. THREE newborns in one week, a record!

As soon as his parents took him out of the car-seat I was just amazed at his coloring – just a wee fuzz of orange hair, so sweet and cute! Carter’s daddy is a firefighter, so we had some fun incorporating that into the images.

The studio was hot (as it always has to be for newborns!) so I had to do a fair bit of convincing to get Dad to put on his jacket, but I’m so glad I did. Someday Carter will treasure this photo of he and his dad!

K family, it was wonderful meeting you – thank you for allowing me to capture these portraits of this special time in your lives!

Waaaanthony

I had to name this post after what Anthony’s parents have taken to calling him – too cute! Anthony was one of 4 newborn sessions that I had in the course of two weeks, out of all of them, he was the only to make it to the “prop” shot stage despite his nickname! Not to say that he didn’t give us a run for the money, he spent most of the almost 4 hour session trying his hardest NOT to fall asleep, and only when we are all ready to call it quits did he finally fall into a very deep sleep, which is how we managed to get so many of the bucket shots you see at the end.

As you can see, it was worth the wait!

Thank you C. family for being so much fun to hang out with during our long waits to get Anthony sleeping! Can’t wait to see you for his future milestones!

This year, I was determined that our family would not be the proverbial shoe-makers children… we WOULD have our own family portrait this year! And through the wonders of a remote shutter release, I was able to take these family self-portraits a few weeks ago.

This was the first full family session I shot at my new favorite location. I couldn’t have asked for a better family to break it in with me. Happy, beautiful and up for anything, meet the M. family!

Fall Family Fun!

This fall was unusually warm, which for a photographer, is a godsend. It’s our busiest season but also can be chilly and tricky to time an outdoor session right so that it’s not too frigid for the little ones! We definitely didn’t need to worry about that for this session, the weekend was practically summertime hot. I think you can feel the sunshine and warmth in these images despite the fall leaves on the ground – due in no small part to the warmth of this beautiful family and the love that they share!

One of my favorite things about being a photographer is getting to watch my clients’ children grow. First to delight in their newborn sweetness, and then to get to see them again as toddlers – watching their personalities emerge – it’s such a privilege!

Ellis’ newborn session a year ago was a dream – in fact, I’m not sure I’ve had such a cooperative newborn since!

And now beautiful toddler Ellis..

Emmett & Owen {Rockland County Family Photography}

Every once in a while, a shoot goes perfectly. So perfectly in fact that I had a nearly impossible time narrowing down which images to put in their gallery! We had handsome, sweet and cooperative three year-old Owen (and I thought cooperative three year-old was an oxymoron!) and smiley, good-natured and impossibly adorable Emmett.

Throw in a beautiful mom, leaves at their fall peak and it’s photography heaven!

Thank you Emmet, Owen and MB for spending this beautiful afternoon with me – I’m so glad that you will have an album of these images to treasure forever!

What to Wear: Fall 2011

Wardrobe choice can make or break the results from a session which is why I go out of the way to address them in my contract! Those of you who have had a session with me, or have one coming up know that I make this suggestions for outfits: Coordinate but don’t match!

Of course, having visual examples is much more useful than a short sentence, so I’m posting a couple of ideas here:

So the importance isn’t so much WHAT palette you choose, so long as everything looks harmonious together. Some other tips:

1) Avoid logos and writing. My rule of thumb is will you want this hanging on your wall 25 years from now? The goal is classic so we want to avoid anything that is distracting to the viewer’s eye.

1) Accessorize! Particularly for the younger subjects, a fun or funky hat can add some lovely variety to the images.

2) Dont forget the feet! Nothing is sadder than beautifully pulled together outfits ruined by shoes that don’t match and stick out like a sore thumb. Take advantage of all the cute hightops, furry boots and leather boots available during the colder months and make a statement not a mistatement with your footwear!

3) Don’t be afraid of pattern! Stripes, patterns and other bold prints give a great pop to images.

4) Treat everyone fairly: When considering the outfit choices as a whole, makes sure that no one person’s outfit stands out much more than the rest.. for example, if three family members are wearing grey and one is in bright yellow and purple stripes that will certainly create an imbalance. Now, take a couple different shades of gray and add in an accent color like eggplant and now we have a great pallete. Or, match the intensity of the yellow stripes with other outfits in bold color choices or patterns!

Now go forth and shop (as if you really needed an excuse!) and don’t forget that I am more than happy to consult with you on wardrobe leading up to our session. Clothing choices can make the difference between a haphazard looking snapshot and a classic, timeless portrait so it’s worth the extra time and thought to make sure the end result is something you will enjoy for years to come!

The story of this shoot has an interesting beginning.. my mother and my auntie had three first cousins that they had not seen since they were very young children because their parents (my grandmother and their father) had been estranged for as long as anyone can remember. Fast forward 40 (50?) years later, and through the miracle of Facebook, they found each other after all these years!

One of the three sisters happened to live quite close by to us, and I was very honored when she asked me to photograph her beautiful sons Noah & Aidan.

What I loved about this shoot is not only that it’s fun to hang out with my new family, but also because the bond that these two brothers have is so special – you can see that they are pretty much inseparable. (It also doesn’t hurt that they are incredibly cute!)

Aren’t they so much fun?

Love you guys, we couldn’t have “found” better people to be related to if we tried! :)
